New Year, New Something That Rhymes with Year

Technically I’m still the same, but my hammock is weirdly outdoors. For the first time in years I have an outdoor area. I’m no longer trapped in a box. I hate apartments. At the same time, urban sprawl isn’t good from an environmental standpoint either. Maybe the answer lies in population reduction? I’m doing my part!

We’ve got cicadas out here in the wastelands. The floury baker cicadas are still about, the one above was intercepted from a noisy miner (Manorina melanocephala) but had catastrophic wing damage at the joint. He was laid to rest that same afternoon. Just because something can suffer, doesn’t mean it should. Rest easy little one.

We’ve also held our first barbecue without incident. My diet remains mostly vegan, thanks to reduced pressure on rent. The only big exception is salmon which will probably be replaced eventually again.

The garden though, and being able to have plants outdoors in the sunlight. What a game changer. I’ve made an active decision to let dandelions take over the buffalo grass. They mow down quite well.

Looks better than any buffalo grass I’ve ever seen. Function over form I say. When they are at full growth, they provide pollen for the bees (native and European), harbour lots of little bug jumpers, which in turn feed the lizards that roam the grass. A little sad when a common blackbird (Turdus merula) snaps up a few, but as long as I can keep the bugs plentiful the lizards should thrive.

Not everything has been rosy though. My first plant casualty, lavender. I had high hopes for it, but since I don’t really know what I am doing it kind of died. Farewell lavender.

My native beehives have been doing well, attracting a few different species of native masked bee (Genus Hylaneus) as well as native wasps (possibly Genus Pison). Both are ridiculously tiny and harmless to us.

Then you’ve got the other bugs, like the pictured assassin bug nymph, Pristhesancus plagipennis. It’s ready to drink the brains of the next honeybee that lands nearby.

And now I’m back on the Apple Watch train with my shiny new Apple Watch SE 2. This time around I’ve picked out the smaller of the two and went with the 40mm. And I have to say, I do not miss the bulk of the 44mm. The Apple Watch is a great motivator to stay on track with new year health goals.

Whoops, that’s another floury baker cicada. I think the several that were in this tree were eaten by the local bat population as they’ve been silent for a while now.

And that’s Stumpie. Tail growth is coming along well. If I find him running about while I’m mowing the lawn I’ll move him into a lizard hotel plastic tub until I’m done.

Don’t look at me like that Stumpie. We don’t want any repeats of how you got the name Stumpie after all!

Then we’ve got this little guy still rocking about, a bar-sided skink (Concinnia tenuis). After being trapped by a redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti). Luckily for the lizard I noticed…

And here’s the data I wanted to show. Weight loss is beginning again. You might notice a drop almost immediately after becoming unemployed, then a spike to >100 kg when I ran out of money thanks to Sydney’s rental market being unaffordable for a single person – let alone an unemployed single person.

Sure, I could have killed myself easily enough but chose to do the paradigm shift thing. Is it enough of a shift? That’s still an unknown at this point. At least for now, there are real life distractions everywhere which seems to leave very little time for uploading videos. Not such a bad thing I guess. That’s not to say I haven’t been recording new footage.

Better go and check the garden is still there and get my 30 minutes of exercise in. Target weight is set at 75 kg this time around. Roughly 20 kg of weight loss to go, and while transitioning. Should be one heck of a ride. 🤷‍♀️

I referred to MDL and so I've only included shows that started in 2023 and to keep this under Tumblr's maximum of 30 images, so I didn't include all screenshots for shared locations!

Anyway, these are my favourite QL locations from 2023:

1. Chong Nonsi Canal Park (Bed Friend, Chains of Heart and The Promise) (location) Shout out to @winnythanawin (aka @aprilblossomgirl) for our discussions about parks lol

2. The timber mill (Chains of Heart) I love wide angle and maximalist shots, so this location has been stuck in my mind.

3. Thai Muslim Women Foundation School (My Dear Gangster Oppa, Y-Destiny, Return Man, 55:15 Never Too Late, Midnight Motel, Never Let Me Go and My Only 12%) (location) I love that the building has specific motifs that are seen in other Islamic architecture. But also, an excessive number of chandeliers is always fun to me. (There are also far too many shared locations, so I picked only a few screenshots).

4. Chakngeaw Chinese Market (Moonlight Chicken) (location) Maybe it's the lanterns and the colours in the scenes, but I loved this location!

5. Como Metropolian Bangkok (Step by Step and Middleman's Love) (location) I described this as a Pride & Prejudice moment once. LOOK AT THE HUGE WINDOWS. That is all, lol

6. 13 Coins Tower Ngamwongwan (Playboyy and 3 Will Be Free) (location) I cannot explain how the slightly dead and uninhabited vibes of this hotel appeal to me but here we are 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️🤷

7. The houses (I Feel You Linger in the Air) (location, location) These details are *everything*. I'm especially a fan of the windows and stained glass!

8. Factopia (Pit Babe) (location) One thing about me is that I am chaotic. Look at this studio that's being used as a home. I love it lol

9. These two temples (Cherry Magic Thailand) (locations) The boat is selling the whole idea for me, though I've been told that there isn't actually a boat operating in these canals anymore, but let me imagine it!

10. Chao Phraya Sky Park (Last Twilight and Low Frequency Pilot Trailer) (location to come) I have actually been waiting to see this bridge/park used and was so excited to see it in Low Frequency's pilot trailer, though it didn't make it to the show. THEN Last Twilight showed up for me. Thank you to the location manager of the show.

11. Tokyo Tower (Shigatsu no Tokyo wa... / Tokyo in April is...) Please ignore how bad Ren looks in the screenshot. I don't care that only the base of my favourite tower can be seen. I'm taking it!!!

12. Whatever this building is (Pit Babe) I mean, I AM CURIOUS about it but haven't found the location. Maybe that's why I'm obsessing a little. Just let me find the location and I will get over it. Probably.

Well, I keep imagining the reader before being taken by Yandere wally to his world, had a date with someone had a crush on the reader at her house, but imagine the reader and the guy on the date kissing and going to some more spicy places TV or computer out of nowhere turned on and had Wally looking not too happy about it… What would happen?

Eyes Glued to the Screen🍎📺

Aspen was using the bathroom, and I sat on my phone scrolling tumblr as I waited for him in our booth. The waiter had already taken our bill, and I was just waiting for my date to get back so we could go.

I decided to check up on that website about the hunt for that lost media show for updates, but no luck. When I'd first heard about it awhile ago, I was immediately enamored. The characters were so charming, and they reminded me so much of the Muppets. I really hoped they'd be able to find some of the actual show soon. So far all they'd found was some old merch and some scripts.

My favorite was a little yellow puppet with a fancy blue hairstyle that supposedly talked to the viewer, Wally Darling. He was just so classy. It was adorable!

I was just finishing putting the tags on a reblog of some fanart when Aspen walked back to our table.

"Ready to go?" He smiled.

"Yep," I replied, shoving my phone in my pocket and standing up after I hit "post".

I took his hand and we left the restaurant, stepping into the chilly evening air just as the sun was going down. We started walking down to my apartment, stopping at a little general store on the way when it started raining. It had already been drizzling, which neither of us minded, but the raindrops were big and fat now, and we didn't have an umbrella.

We tried to wait it out, but after fifteen minuets we just gave up and bought an umbrella to share.

"Dammit, I'm sorry about this," I said as we walked back to my apartment. "I looked at the weather before our date and I thought it'd be over by the time we were done. I-"

"Hey, hey," said Aspen. "You don't gotta put yourself down like that. I didn't bring an umbrella, did I?" He chuckled sweetly, and it really did make me feel better. He was such a little sweetheart.

I should get him some flowers sometime.

We got to my apartment and shed our wet coats, leaving them on hooks. The rain was really coming down now, picking up even more. I wondered vaguely if that was thunder that I heard just now.

We left our shoes on a towel by the door, and I went to go change from my jeans to my sweatpants.

"I'll be back in just a minute~" I called over my shoulder. "Go ahead and start the movie."

I disappeared into my room and undid my belt. I was just putting it away when I heard my phone vibrate on the table. I picked it up to see a text from a number I didn't recognize.

"You didn't forget me, did you?"

I shook my head, assuming it was a wrong number. I had my pants off and was folding them up when I got another text. This time, it was an image. It was hard to tell because it was so dark, but it looked like the vague shape of a face, but the eyes were easiest to make out. It was hard to miss, actually, since they seemed to be able to actually see me.

I was tying up my sweatpants when I got the third text. My curiosity got the best of me, and I opened up the audio message. There was an odd monotone voice speaking to me from... somewhere. The audio quality was... poor.

"Why... why don't you answer me? I can see you. Can't you see me anymore? Just leave him alone. Just leave him. Don't look at him... just look at me... y/n."

It was hard to hear because of the bad audio and because it was whispered, but the voice knew my name somehow. It knew me. It wasn't a wrong number. I could feel the hair rising on my neck...

I jumped almost ten feet in the air when the thunder and lightning crashed outside, stopping myself from shrieking just in time.

I blocked the number and headed outside.

"Hey," I said, trying to sound nonchalant. "Has the Doc showed him the Delorian yet?"

"Nope, but he's about to," said Aspen, scooting over. "Come sit. I got a nice blanket for us to cuddle in."

I sat next to him in the blanket, and after a while he started leaning on me, and I put my arm around him. I slid my hand down his back and casually made my way under his shirt, and he scooted closer.

Before we could get any more intimate, a roll of thunder crashed outside and a flash of lightning lit up the room in a blinding bright white.

When it was over, all the lamps we had on before were off, and the tv was too.

"Looks like the storm hit the power," I sighed. I got up to go check the tv, and Aspen pulled the blanket close to him.

"I hope it doesn't get too cold in here with the heater not working," he muttered.

I could think of one or two ways we could warm up.

As I bent down to the tv to see if I could do anything with it, it turned on again, displaying nothing but static and some loud static sounds. I tried fiddling with it, but I couldn't get that noise to turn down.

But... were those words in the static? Or was I just hearing things? I bent down as close as I could to hear, and I could've sworn I saw those same eyes that I saw in the text.

"Y/n... you see me now, don't you? Oh, good. We can see each other again."

I froze in fear at hearing that ominous voice again, this time from the tv. It was so quiet, I was certain Aspen couldn't hear.

The eyes became clearer too.

"My, my... I do think I'll just have to take you back with me. Won't that be wonderful, my dear?"

The static seemed to part like a curtain and he pulled himself through, grabbing me by the shoulders.

"Let's go, sweetheart!"

The last thing I heard was Aspen's scream as I was pulled through to the other side.

I was going to comment but apparently you can’t take criticism anymore and turned comments off but your dismissal of NSFW content as “oh it’s just a penis grow up that’s barely sexual” is actually fucking insane. How is a penis NOT that bad? Would you be okay with a man flashing it around in public in front of children because to you it’s not that bad? Because that’s what you’re doing.

You may put 18+ on your things but you are literally using the Hogwarts Legacy tags, a place shared with minors, and adding barely censored content. It’s not “just a penis and nipples” when there are minors concerned and you’re putting a tiny blur over a dick.

Of course you can’t control them consuming adult content when they aren’t supposed to be but as a fucking 27 year old you have to have some responsibility and hiding literal porn behind something as small as a see more button is very irresponsible of you. You may have apparently seen AI generated images of Sebastian the same (where? I’ve never seen an AI penis of his hiding in plain sight on tumblr but pop off I guess) but there are terms and conditions to using Tumblr for a reason. A major one being minors use this site hence why there isn’t supposed to be nudity.

Have some fucking respect for the others you share the space with and recognise you are sharing a fandom with literal children and put your porn elsewhere like Poipiku or in 18+ servers like the rest of the responsible NSFW creators do.

You actually make me fucking sick the way you dismiss how you’re spreading NSFW content and brushing it off when you’re called out on it.

I have not turned off comments at any time. But hey, it's the last comment I answer.

1) There's a lot, a LOT of sexual content on Tumblr. And I'm talking about truly explicit content, I'm not talking about a nipple or a penis. I'm talking about sex. Yes, I have seen AI photos of Sebastian completely naked, with his penis and everything, but maybe since he is young nothing happens.

2) While it is true that images where genitals appear "openly" are not allowed, my image (which is only one for God's sake) appears more like a background. The image does not focus on that, it does not show it in all its details, which is what is prohibited on the platform. Tumblr accepts nudity, there are thousands of nudes out there of all kinds. Just search for "nudes" and you'll be surprised at how much more explicit sexual content than mine exists.

3) Tumblr indicates that if you upload nudes you indicate it on the tags, I don't just do that. I censor the image and then if someone wants to see the image uncensored they are free to do so by clicking on it.

4) It's not my damn fault that a minor freely wants to see my images. This is a free site and I'm uploading legal content, nudity that you could see in an art gallery. This is a website, not an elementary school. I'm not here to educate anyone.

5) Make yourself a cup of tea that looks a little altered. Again, I'm not uploading anything excessive or illegal, I'm uploading nudes that could be seen in an art gallery. They are not even having sex, and if it makes you sick my content just BLOCK MY ACCOUNT. That little button exists.

6) Oh, by the way, do you know what's illegal? I'm going to copy and paste the following from the Tumblr rules:

Harm to Minors. Don't post or solicit content that features the abuse of a minor, that includes suggestive or sexual content involving a minor or anyone that appears to be a minor, or that facilitates or promotes child sexual abuse. "Content" may include photos of real individuals, illustrations, animation, or text. Posting or reblogging child sexual abuse material is a serious crime for which we have no tolerance.

I have seen people who write pure and very harsh violations of minors. People from the fandom. With their Hogwarts Legacy tags too, you know? And have I done something? Have I denounced? Have I written insulting that person? I just ignored it and that's it. And that's it's illegal content on the platform.

And I leave this issue aside because I am very tired. The drama you're making over an undetailed penis is what's really ridiculous here.

The Ink Demonth 2023 - Day 26. Demon

Day 26. Demon Crossover: The Owl House You're wrong, Luz. This is Earth. Just a very, very strange and specific piece of Earth. Yes, this is the exit door from BATIM. Now you know why there was such a strange light coming from them X"D

It was even fun to draw, although I was very hesitant to do it, which became even more intense just before colouring (which I will tell you about in a moment). The premise was that Luz opened a portal to the Workshop during her attempts to recreate the Portal Doors - this is the period in which King was searching for his father (and didn't know who he was). By the way, this also explains how Bendy managed to get out of the Studio, breaking the curse, and went on his tour around the multiverse :D

And now it will be less fun. I've had a really bad panic attack and anxiety in the last twenty-four hours - and for a while I didn't want to post anything else. Never. And it all started with a short exchange of comments under picture Day 23. Contraband on dA (screenshot here). It doesn't seem like anything (I tried to make it a joke, but then they blocked me), but I checked this person's account and discovered that they were publishing other people's works there (mainly from Twitter and Pinteres). I don't know if it was with their consent, but it seems to me that if they have consent to it, they should still include information about the original author of the work in the description of the image (I'm not even saying that it would be perfect to provide a link to the original work), and this is not the case does. If it weren't for the fact that some of the works have watermarks or signatures of the original authors, you might think that the guy draws themself - nowhere does they state that this is the case, but they comments on the pictures as if they were their author. Plus as I said earlier, they blocked me before i could ask about these (probably stolen) arts. Why did it make me anxious and paranoid? Well, 'cause I am very, very afraid of my works being stolen. I'm not very popular, so there's little chance of this happening - and I usually don't remember such things happening. Sometimes I feel anxiety when I find my arts on Pinterest or strange websites with pictures - I didn't give permission for that. This person, however, reminded me of it with their indignation that how do I have the right not to have a picture of Owl House when the search engine returned it as Owl House. As I say, I was ready to give up further work not only on Ink Demonth (especially since, as you can see, this entry is about Owl House, on which that person clearly has an unhealthy fixation), but also any work that I had post on dA or tumblr. I blocked them on dA, but cannot block myself for them in the whole internet, right? First of all, my paranoia resulted in me blocking the visibility of my tumblr for people who are not logged in, I'm also trying to do something like that for dA, but I don't think it's possible. I don't know where I'll end up with my paranoia - but my friends have made a lot of effort to convince me that everything is ok. Finally, I decided to post this picture and I'll probably upload other Ink Demonth entries at last. I hope I won't regret it :c But I'm afraid and I don't know if after finishing the Ink Demonth challenge I won't give up (for some time or forever) publishing my drawings on the Internet. I wanted you to know. It's bad. My anxiety doesn't necessarily make sense - but it has huge consequences.

My paranoia brought another bad thing. Although I really liked the show The Owl House and was looking forward to the translation and dubbing of the next season in my country (the one that takes place on Earth) - I'm not waiting for it anymore. To be honest, I'm sick of it and feel anxious just looking at the characters of the show. Here look, how can a bad fandom ruin even the coolest thing :/ Someone will say that I am exaggerating. YES I KNOW. But that's how my fucked up, full of illnes mind works and I have no influence on it.

I didn't want such a monologue under this art. I wanted to write here which characters I like and who I'm shipping with whom - but right now... well. No. Sorry.

I just want to have the joy of creating again…

So. You wanna know about the SGE site, huh? Well.

Once upon a time, there was an online community.

Fandom forum, though the Open Chat one (equivalent of a #general channel in a discord server) was by far the most used. You got a book you read when you were 12 that changed your life? SGE's the acronym for what was that book for me. You might've seen the movie adaptation on Netflix a couple years back. I really waited seven years for that... I'm getting off topic. Back to the website.

The userbase was in the 8-17 age range, 90% girls, many of us the kind of people who devoured books like it was nothing in our then-ongoing preteen years. The few moderators never even looked at us unless we reported a glitch, spammer, or bigot for them to deal with, so we had no adult supervision.

Open Chat was used for, among other things, the most chaotic unhinged roleplay you can imagine. We got really into it. Wild parties that lasted days, food fights that quickly escalated into the hunger games, everything to do with those living shadows, Bob the alien, the Potato Kingdom, many of us had pets or imaginary friends doing this alongside us, I'm barely scratching the surface here, if I were to try to explain it all we'd be here for weeks. Quoting the Bee Movie script or singing certain songs had a tendency to cause all hell to break loose paranormally, one time it opened a portal to the underworld. It was the most fun ever. There was a reason we'd greet newcomers with "try not to die".

Aside from the chaos, there was contests where we'd reply with images of dresses or cute animals or what else have you, lots of clubs based around various things, people would sing (post song lyrics, sometimes roleplaying whole flashy performances) and post fun questions for everyone to answer and stories and neat videos we found and really good poetry and so, so much more that we didn't archive because we just assumed it would always be there.

It's where I met a lot of my closest friends- hell, it was the only place where I regularly got invited to participate in anything. I don't think there's anyone on that site who didn't forge friendships there. It's also how I got into quite a lot of songs and books and shows, and how I learned HTML formatting. That site was my home. It was the best part of my life for years.

You know how online friends are, though. Sometimes they disappear without a trace, a warning, or an explanation. Or their parents forbid them from going on the site because they think online chat rooms are dangerous.

I joined at 12. By the time I was nearing age 15, most of my friends had disappeared without a trace, never to return. I was one of the very few users to join in 2016 who was still active. The site wasn't abandoned, there were new people everywhere, but...

I don't pretend to understand the why of it, but the magic just. Started fading, I suppose. The community was falling apart. The roleplay got more stale and repetitive and often died down before it went anywhere. It all slowly declined and decayed and became a shell of itself. A hollow mimicry of what we once had. It wasn't really fun anymore, and I found myself wondering what was left to stay for. Just got worse in this regards, up until the website's final days, even after the rest of the userbase started becoming aware of it.

Eventually one day, the Open Chat started glitching hard. It had done that before, many times, and always been fixed. That time, though, it went down for repairs and never came back up. They said they'd bring it back, and they never did. Here's the thing, though- our posts all disappeared. When other forums on that website got closed around then, we could still see the posts by going through our post histories, we just couldn't reply to them. Open Chat and every last record of what we did there just vanished entirely, like it never existed.

It never even got crawled by the Wayback Machine.

...Now that I mention it, tomorrow's actually the anniversary of when Open Chat went down... how the FUCK was that five years ago it does NOT feel like it's been anywhere near that long.

Anyways.

During this time, the very few (like, there was maybe 2 at most) moderators had begun responding to drama by banning offsite links, followed by, several months after we lost our Open Chat, banning off-topic (non-SGE-related) discussions entirely, which sparked riots and a petition and they knew what it meant to the userbase, even to newer people who'd only known the comparatively lifeless version, we told the admins as hard as we could, and they did nothing. Well, other users told them anyways. I knew the site was beyond saving and thus didn't do anything but listen to music and make "let me guess, your home?" memes.

We also lost the ability to make posts in our profiles that weren't in any forums but could be seen if you went through the user's post history.

The official end was the "revamp" of the website, that was just a shutdown. They deleted everything that was left of it and all the records of what we were, and made a completely new website that the old one's url now redirects to. Though at least this time they had the courtesy to announce it a month and a half in advance so we could load as much as we could of what remained into archive.org during those weeks. There's no forum feature on the new site, and user data wasn't transferred. I never made an account on the new site. Why would I?

You can probably guess by reading those lyrics and asofterworld screencaps that I, and at least some other users I'm still in contact with, never really got over the death of that community.

That last image in my webweave is a screenshot of the page that now comes up whenever you type in the url for a forum or an old site member's profile and hit enter.

Sometimes I think about like. When I first really got access to the internet, so much of what I liked growing up suddenly became dirty.

I was raised as a girl. And I liked plenty of girl targeted media. Kim Possible and My Little Pony were some of my favorites. I also watched some media targeted more at young boys. Primarily anime. Like Dragon Ball Z and Naruto. Because my dad liked those, so he didn't really have an issue with me liking them too because it was cool to him to share some interests. Which was nice.

And eventually we got a family computer and I was allowed to use it pretty regularly starting mainly in middle school. And I wanted to draw all my favorite cartoon characters.

It was really easy to find reference images of the Naruto characters and Dragon Ball Z characters I liked. Most of the image results were screenshots from the show or cool fanart of them using their powers to blow stuff up. And I figured finding images to reference for Kim Possible and My Little Pony wouldn't be any harder. I had started watching Friendship Is Magic recently. Pinkie Pie and Rarity were my favorites, and I wanted to draw them. And Kim. And Shego.

And it did not take a long scroll down the Google image search results to see more than just a little suggestive or outright explicit porn art of all of them. And my curious mind wanted to know why that was in the search results. It didn't seem to me like that should be so easily available. But it turned out a LOT of people. Mostly grown men. Decided the ponies and Kim and Shego were sexy and decided to draw and post on many many non-adult catered websites a lot of porn.

And suddenly my pony figures and Equestria girls dolls felt like sex objects in my bedroom. And my Kim Possible fanart sitting in my sketchbook felt dirty. And the shows weren't as fun to watch anymore. I didn't end up finishing all the seasons of Friendship is Magic.

I sort of just threw myself into the boy things I was allowed to like since then. People didn't really have any questions about that, especially since I socially transitioned to male in highschool. I bet plenty of them just assumed I liked boy stuff to go with my new boy gender lol.

I wish I had still enjoyed Kim Possible and My Little Pony when I was younger though. I missed those medias but felt like I couldn't even touch them anymore. Especially after I went through a sexual trauma in highschool that I honestly don't want to publicly recount. I want to rewatch both series for fun. But I still can't work up the nerve.

And I think a lot about like. How I was lucky to have boy interests to fall back on because I know and knew plenty of people raised as girls who weren't allowed to watch boy targeted media at all. Who probably went through something eerily similar and then had nothing at all that felt okay to watch.

And sometimes I wish this was more important to people when they discuss media consumption and fandom. Sometimes I wish people were more interested in adult centered fandom sites for their horny art so at least some kid on the internet knows it's going to be porn before they choose whether or not to click. Sometimes I wish some of the first things I heard about when engaging with fandom centered around kids media weren't the top ten most disgusting porn fics. And even though I don't post explicit NSFW on my art Tumblr, I try to make it clear I find Transformers characters attractive so that people understand that before deciding to follow me even there or view more of my art. Because I actually think open and up front disclosure of "I am an adult who finds cartoon characters attractive so keep that in mind before you choose to view my work" is important. And honestly the least I can do.

And I'm not like. Saying you have to stop drawing cartoon characters sexy or whatever. I know I'm not going to stop finding Transformers robots hot. And I'm not out to advocate for censorship. I just think like. People are too used to pointing and laughing at sites pushing "kid friendly" fixes to their apps that don't do anything but frustrate users and just mean porn goes untagged. And are too used to just. Seeing cartoon character porn unfiltered cross their dash. That even well intentioned people don't really stop to pause to be like. Hey maybe I don't want my horny drawing of a kids show character to be at the top of Google search results. And maybe I should filter the image appropriately with the sites' filters or choose a more adult site for it in general.

Because honestly kids should be allowed to enjoy media without adults' sex fantasies being constantly inescapable to them.

Everytime I casually reference that I was on 4chan a LOT from about 4th grade to mid high school, I get a small kick that's both good and bad. I feel like a relic of internet history for a younger generation that seems to commonly generalize 4chan as entirely racist Nazi pedophiles.

Don't get me wrong, there were racists and Nazis and pedophiles. There were people who did actual crimes or wanted to plan actual crimes. Someone gave a warning for a school shooting a few times maybe. All of that is real and happened - mostly on the /b/ forum, which was the biggest and most popular image board.

What I think people don't include when they talk about that is just how big /b/ was. It was a constant deluge of conversations. Like if it was only hate crimes and murders and actual felonies, it'd be taken down pretty quickly. The nefarious part about that community is that it was so massive and quick-fire that by the time you hear someones planning a crime the thread be gone forever. /b/ had ten pages, and it was common knowledge that a thread was near dead if it slipped past page two. I literally never went to page ten. Why would I? A thread on page ten is like minutes away from being wiped.

So yeah, it was essentially like a public park. Like a public park in a big city. I live in Portland, so it could be by the Waterfront. Maybe there are stabbings. Maybe people are doing drugs. There might be a car parked just...on the park? Why? How?

But also it's a big river and it's a big strip of park and if I go to the same spot every day for a month, I'm going to see something truly despicable maybe once. Even if I'm there for hours. The rest is a mixture of people doing vaguely unhinged shit like you'd see if you walked around a lot of downtown cities these days, stuff that's really easy to ignore because they're just shouting slurs at no one, and just regular human stuff.

Like shitposts and memes. People asking for advice and actually getting reasonable advice. Life hacks threads were really helpful for me because I had to cook for my older siblings. I made my first spaghetti carbonara using a recipe I got off /b/. 4chan was always from my experience niche enough to have a big techie base so people would argue over tech stuff or ask for suggestions. People made threads sharing cool wallpapers they collected or albums they pirated. I discovered like two thirds of my music tastes on 4chan. 4chan surpasses tumblrs influence on online culture, working in a similar field but on a MUCH larger scale. As far as I'm aware they're one of the central origins of creepypastas, which matters to probably few else but me.

I had a creepypasta folder on my computer with separate images that were just black with white text of the story. Like the creepypasta wiki was in early development when I was a freshman in high school I think. Before that I would manually manage individual images of creepypastas to my friends do you understand how wild the passage of time is?

This is not me romanticizing 4chan or /b/. I don't go there anymore. I don't think lurking there sounds fun anymore. But I do acknowledge the fact that the website gets 22 million unique visitors every month.

Can you conceptualize like a single mall that gets 22 million unique people coming in and out every 30 days? I picture it in my head and I think it's amazing as a piece of technology and humanity intertwining, for both good and evil and mundanity. I also think it's painfully obvious that some people would do crimes or show their dicks.

There were a lot of dicks on /b/. That. I don't have an explanation for that. There were a lot of threads of people just sharing pictures of their dicks. Mostly with no comment? I never understood the reason and usually just scrolled past because that's what you do. I have a theory that a lot of people who used to be really into the community on /b/ are now very happily and peacefully some kind of queer after solving some inner angst, but that might just be wishful thinking.

No, Doctors Aren't To Blame for AI Using Your Medical Record Photos, Here's How and Why

People care TOO MUCH about the IP laws of dumb cartoons like Mickey Mouse than the real abuse of data going on, acting like the only conversation worth having is "is copyright good or bad", but as a med student I have a vested interest in talking about data collection ethics.

You're welcome to address my bias or in less kind words say I'm in the pocket of "big pharma" or that I'm a "copyright maximalist" but I'm doing this purely to explain and educate how the LAION team is dishonest, manipulative, malicious and hides behind the good graces of "open-source" and "non-profit".

To start; how does LAION get hold of your photos? To put it shortly: Common Crawl, a service that has indexed and scraped web pages from 2014 until 2021. But, unlike LAION Common Crawl has a TOS, and states on their website that they do not allow users to violate IP or circumvent copy-protection using their data.

The highlights in orange are important, but for future points.

So how does this affect medical photos? "They shouldn't be on the internet in the first place!" You might say. This is where things get a bit muddy, because in the most popular case being spread the user has signed a consent forum allowing the use of their photos in medical journals, seen here;

Please make note of the first line, "to be used for my care, medical presentations and/or articles".

So how did it get online?

Despite what a lot of people jump to assume, this most likely was not the fault of the doctor – and unfortunately he's not alive anymore to even clarify what went wrong, RIP. There are many journals online on the user's condition – one which is particularly rare and as such requires study and photos for identification, many with attached images that have been scraped too. This user is most certainly not alone.

For background, PubMed is the largest site for sharing medical journals and case studies on the internet. It contains a wealth of information and is crucial to the safety and sanity of every overworked med student writing their 30th pharmacology paper. It also has attached images in some cases. These images are necessary to the journal, case study, research paper, whathaveyou that's being uploaded. They're also not just uploaded willy nilly. There are consent forms like the one seen above, procedures, and patient rights that are to be respected and honored. What I want to emphasize,

Being on a journal ≠ free to use.

Being online ≠ free to use.

If you do not have the patient's signed consent, you are not allowed to use the image at all, even in a transformative manner. It is not yours to use.

So how does LAION respond to this? Lying like shitty assholes, of course. Vice has done a very insightful article on just what LAION has stored within it and showing many harrowing stories of nonconsensual pornography, graphic executions and CSEM on the database, found here.

A very interesting part of the article that I'd like to draw attention to, though, is LAION team's claims about the copyright applied to these images. The claim in blue that all data falls under creative commons (lying about the copyright to every image) directly contradicts the claim in red (divorcing the team from copyright).

The claim in orange is stupid because it claims photos of SSNs and addresses directly linked to your name are not personal data if they dont contain your face. It also is not GDP compliant, as they elevate their own definition of what private data is over what your actual private data is.

But whatever, team LAION is on this!! They got it, they'll definitely be pruning their database to remove all of the offending– aaaand they literally just locked the discord help channel, deleted the entire exchange and accused Vice of writing a "hit piece", as reported on by motherboard here. Classy, LAION!

They don't even remove images from their database unless you explicitly email them, and even then they first condescendingly tell you to download the entire database, find the image and the link tied to it, then remove the image from the internet yourself– somehow. Classy, LAION.

Of course, the medical system isn't completely free from blame here, from the new motherboard article;

Zack Marshall, an associate professor of Community Rehabilitation, and Disability Studies at the University of Calgary, has been researching the spread of patient medical photographs in Google Image Search Results and found that in over 70 percent of case reports, at least one image from the report will be found on Google Images. Most patients do not know that they even end up in medical journals, and most clinicians do not know that their patient photographs could be found online. 

“[Clinicians] wouldn't even know to warn their patients. Most of the consent forms say nothing about this. There are some consent forms that have been developed that will at least mention if you were photographed and published in a peer-reviewed journal online, [the image is] out of everybody's hands,” Marshall said. After hearing about the person whose patient photograph was found in the LAION-5B dataset, Marshall said he is trying to figure out what patients and clinicians can do to protect their images, especially as their images are now being used to train AI without their consent. 

It's a case of new risks that people have not been aware of, and of course people can't keep up with the evolving web of tech bro exploiters chomping at the bit to index every image of CSEM and ISIS beheading they can get their hands on. If artists are still trying to get informed on the topic, expecting doctors who share this information for the benefit of other doctors to be hiding it behind expensive paywalls and elaborate gates just to cut off the tech bros is asinine. But regardless, if you don't want to go on a journal, now you are aware of the possibility and can not consent to it in the future.

LAION however can't be held accountable themselves because, despite facilitating abuse, they're not direct participants in the training of data, they just compiled it and served it on a gold platter. But on the bright side, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has begun practicing algorithmic destruction, which is demanding that companies and organizations destroy the algorithms or AI models that it has built using personal information and data collected in a bad faith or illegally. FTC Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter published a Yale Journal of Law and Technology article alongside other FTC lawyers that highlighted algorithmic destruction as an important tool that would target the ability of algorithms “to amplify injustice while simultaneously making injustice less detectable” through training their systems on datasets that already contain bias, including racist and sexist imagery. 

“The premise is simple: when companies collect data illegally, they should not be able to profit from either the data or any algorithm developed using it,” they wrote in the article. “This innovative enforcement approach should send a clear message to companies engaging in illicit data collection in order to train AI models: Not worth it.”

This is likely going to be the fate of any algorithms that take advantage of the illegal data collected in LAION-5B.

So what do we take from all of this?

Please read consent forms thoroughly.

Algorithmic destruction should befall LAION-5B and I wouldn't mind if every member on the team is arrested

Addendum, which I know people will ask; Am I against AI art? Well, I'm against unethical bullshit, which LAION team does plenty, and which most if not all AI algorithms are being trained on. While I hate going for the elephant in the room, capitalism is to blame for the absolutely abhorrent implementation of AI, and so it can't exist without being inherently unethical in these conditions.

This morning the AI system was sending "peace" into my brain while I couldn't move and was lying down on a bed. "The peace" was an illusion of freedom in my mind and artificial feeling of peace, silence and freedom generated by AI.

They have been doing like this hours and hours day and night everyday over for a year.

I really hate the Internet now, and don't know what to do about it.

Spoilers are constantly being posted everywhere for all sorts of stories, by "fans" and the companies themselves. People are fake as heck, and overuniform memes. There's always something with a million sound effects and quick cuts flashing in your face. There's always an ad being pushed in your face. Websites are basic, and aren't fun to go to anymore. There's a crap ton of censorship. Conversations are arguments now. AI is suggesting how people should finish their sentences, and people probably use the suggestions. The loudest voices are super privileged, and also caught up in this dumb liberal/conservative culture. Everything has to have a star rating or percent or count attached to it for its worth, and you can't even look that thing up without seeing that number. So much is about trying to work with an "algorithm". So much is pushed by it. Et cetera. I can't even watch a YouTube video without suggestions, comments in my peripheral vision.

It's like computers are programming humanity, and we wrote the program. We created this thing to ruin us.

This used to be a sincere, global portal to interact with the world. It used to be full of us. The best of us. Now...it's just a mess.

I just had a part of X-Men 97 spoiled by an artist I followed onlined. I blocked him. He did it so casually.

I remember when I was 18 I was able to experience Watchmen fresh, the movie and comic. No reviews, ratings, images. Not really. I had to seek out spoilers, opinions, dissection. I had the option of not seeing those things.

When the Watchmen TV show came out someone at Collider, I think, ruined a big part. People came after him. He said like "The episode came out days ago. It's your fault if you haven't seen it." I've had that said to me when someone posted a spoiler to Guardians of The Galaxy (the movie) on Tumblr years ago.

But then days, weeks ago an official DC page posted a spoiler about the same thing. Casually. In the name of "engagement", "content".

Nothing has any value. It's just digital noise. Quick consumption and throw away. Nothing settles, sits, affects, changes a person's life.

My plan was to rewatch the old X-Men cartoon, and the rest of the other 90's Marvel cartoons. Then get to X-Men 97 on my own time.

Ever since I started living in Chicago full-time 24 years ago...it's been hell to try to do anything. An extreme. Something a lot of people will never deal with. But shouldn't I be able to experience things on my own time? Shouldn't I have a choice? Why is it forced on me now? Can't I open a book by choice? Why are the pages forced on my eyes now?

And if I avoid the Internet altogether I can't learn about new stuff. I'm out of the loop, as people say.

But the Internet used to be limited, with who used it. It's terrible to say, but it really did get ruined when "everyone" started using it, and bringing thier BS here.

That earlier group of people online were so much better. Very specific.

I don't know what I'm saying.

Y'know...if I could get back to what was stolen from me years ago, I wouldn't have to be online so much. But still...

I don't have Threads or Twitter installed.

I want to get off of this thing. I need to. It didn't used to be this way.

I honestly agree with all of this even though I felt kind of frustrated about the unresolved sexual tension between the two of them not culminating in a kiss, but you know what, whatever, they did it the way they did it. Kate has total independence and agency in the film. There's never any question that she could be doing anything because of a romance. That's not for nothing.

The original 1996 movie has this tension because it's like well would Bill really do any of these things if he didn't secretly want Jo back? Because it's the 90s and everything was kind of a heterosexual romcom back then, you know that they just HAVE to get together at the end. Bill sheds his fiancée in the middle of the script (Jami Gertz plays this really well, btw; Melissa realizes that this isn't the relationship she signed up for and nopes out on her own terms and it's not cruel to her character at all). At the end of the movie Bill and Jo have nothing except each other and they realize they need each other and they make out and have their little faux argument about who's going to run the lab. It's a good resolution for them and fits in the 1996 universe of the movie exactly as it needs to.

The 2024 movie hits all the same story beats in the exact same order and with the exact same pacing as the 1996 movie, it just gets to them in different ways and they mean different things. It's a total structural and visual riff on the previous film, which I've seen soooo many times that it's like automatic to me. I wanted that story beat of them kissing at the end to satisfy my own desire to see Glen Powell make out with somebody but I am willing to accept that maybe that's the story they wanted to tell, a story about two people who are extremely nerdy about a specific thing and find each other at a pivotal moment and decide to combine forces to accomplish something greater and it wasn't romantic for them, they're just really great colleagues and friends. Like. Sure. Okay.

I think it's executed well and I think it gives the characters enough texture and agency to pull it off. I think there is an aspect to this that could be part of the "sexlessness panic" where like movies aren't horny anymore and what does that mean about society, are they trying to take horniness from us, etc. maybe they are. It's a BIT of a tease to show Glen Powell in a wet white tshirt but maybe I'm just a dirty bitch. There's an intellectual and physical tension between the characters that plays very well and makes you THINK there's going to be a certain payoff. I don't think they teased it or telegraphed it but I do think the actors had a certain chemistry that could have been utilized to that end, to give the audience that movie theater candy, so to speak. Maybe it works better that they didn't and it's authentically the story they wanted to tell. But...

To reflect on another recent many-years-later sequel : One thing I thought was interesting about Top Gun: Maverick was that despite depicting a romance and even sex, they neutered it onscreen, not really showing the characters' bodies in a sensual way, like oh we can't show people in their 50s/60s in an erotic context. So while there was a romance, I didn't feel sexual tension between those characters, and the effect was kind of... idk it was like accidentally seeing your parents have sex. (To say nothing of the fact that Tom Cruise is a scary as fuck human being and there was very clearly like an image management sanitization happening with that movie, like "this is the guy that brought movies back baby!!!" after the pandemic but really he is a Scientologist with ex wives who are afraid of him and a PR team more advanced than that of most nation states, so it's kinda hard to pitch him as a romantic lead these days)

Maybe what I'm really saying here is that Glen Powell exudes sex appeal and the production didn't necessarily do anything to curtail that in Twisters which is why this website is now full of "Tyler Owens x reader" fanfic written probably by teenagers inspired by a movie where there is absolutely no romantic or sexual subplot whatsoever.

I respect and honor their decision but could I have made it as a writer? I don't know if I could have the strength.

Went to see "Twisters" tonight and it was thoroughly enjoyable!

Some spoilers below the cut

Okay first of all, I'm extremely excited to say that they don't push a love triangle despite there being a girl MC and two main guys. One of them is an old friend who remains firmly an old friend, with no indication that he has romantic feelings. Like they get to be actual friends!!!!! And the other, while potentially a love interest, had just as much potential to be a friend instead, and in an extremely important (to me) way they do not kiss! I was shocked, actually. I expected them to pull out a "gotta have a kiss to appease the amatonormative folks" but nope! Not even in the little mid credit blurb. He stays the night at her childhood home with her and nothing happens. Like not even an awkward moment of tension, they don't even show them going to bed I don't think.

And I feel this to my bones, she was allowed to be the star. She changed her old friend's mind and gave him a chance to choose doing the right thing and he did it because he cared about her opinion of him and wanted to be who she thought he was. And the other guy found out she had dreams/goals of doing something and instead of taking them or doing it for her, he said what can I do to help you, and she chose to let him help her. It was so softly done!! And this guy, he was a full on attention hound with a YouTube channel and loves showing off and he's taking a press guy into the storms to do a story about how awesome he is at tornado wrangling. But when it comes down to it, he tells the reporter she's the real story AND SHE IS!! The article gets written about her instead!

The beginning was. A lot. You get introduced to the storm hunting group, and then immediately 3 of the 5 get killed and the MC almost does, all because she miscalculated. But you know what? She a) keeps her trauma and b) continues doing meteorology stuff, just from a safer distance. Like it's very clear that tornadoes are still this girl's passion, something she loves with every fiber of her being, but she's also been traumatized by losing her boyfriend and two of her closest friends (not to mention her dream project) and nearly her life, in one go. And even still it is something she literally can't stay away from, she still takes a job involved with them through data analysis, and you can practically feel it killing her at the start. The way she lights up at the mention of studying them more closely like she had wanted to, and that excitement immediately chased out by fear. It was nicely done.

They did a really nice thing with the music as well- PERFECTLY captured that kind of moment where the rest of the world drops away and all you can perceive for a moment or two is this thing you love so much it feels like time stops to let you love it more. Except she's looking at weather. At winds moving or clouds or tornadoes. Which is so cool of them to have done for her. This girl loves one thing and it's fuckin WEATHER.

The "villain" of the story is understated and they really don't waste time going into detail about it, which is great because the MC isn't really interested in finding out more about the real estate mogul capitalizing on the devastation. She just doesn't want her friend working for them anymore. She finds out he is, she draws a line in the sand and tells him he should be doing the right thing not the easy thing, and her friend takes her objection seriously and alters his behavior. And that's all the more they really get into that side of the story. Why waste time on it when there's more tornadoes to show? This movie did what Godzilla: King of Monsters failed to do- showed us the monster as much as possible and actually I do care about the people still because none of their problems were irrelevant, none of them were problems for the sake of having problems.

Anyway this movie was enjoyable to me. If you like weather phenomena, storm chasing, chaos, and actually interesting interpersonal relationships, go have a watch!

I wholeheartedly agree with your stance on AI "art" being violating and problematic.

However, I do have a problem with the way you stated that even though you know MBB to be an adult, she is still Eleven from ST and a minor in your eyes.

She's 19. She's engaged. Because of her career she is probably more independent than anyone of us was at that age. And I do think that perpetual viewing of actors as 'stuck' as a character they once portrayed is problematic.

This is what happened when people thought "omg Hannah Montana has gone nuts" or "what happened to the sweet Demi Lovato?" Or anything else involving child actors.

What happened? They grew up.

Other than that, your point about AI generated images (I'm not even calling it 'art' anymore) stands. It's creepy and violating, especially because AI is getting 'better' (= more accurate) and I'm honestly afraid that before long we will have full-on deepfake porn videos with actors who never asked for that shit.

That said; it does raise the question with me whether or not a similar stance is warranted against NSFW artwork or smut with the actors rather than portrayed characters as the subject. (I've never been a big fan of RPF, and I don't think I've come across "real person fan art", so I can't really say with certainty if it would make me uncomfortable. But the AI things... They just make my skin crawl.)

The Millie thing I think is more my personal view of her physically. I think I view Millie as still a young child is because of her youthful face and the characters she plays. I'm 22. It's still so hard for me to think she's only 2-3 years younger than me. To me she still looks 16. Very young. If she had a sex scene in the next 5-10 years I might still be inclined to turn away. She definitely has accomplished a lot.

I just cannot physically imagine her in sexual light at this present time. She has child like appearances other than when she's dolled up from a magazine shoot with Photoshop and then appears borderline age appropriate.

The same can be said for actor Bella Ramsey who is 20 years old, they have a very young look in appearance and have played many roles depicting them as younger than their original age. But both of them definitely deserve to be admired and respected to the work they've contributed.

So being told there's ai images with "white sauce" on her face makes my insides churn. Either a very young fan has generated that or someone's computer that might need to be investigated.

I never really knew who Hannah Montana was until wrecking ball (wasn't allowed to watch tv a lot growing up as a kid. And I was always told she was a slut in the tv show which is why I wasn't allowed to watch it -by gross male family members.) and I didn't know who Demi Lovato was AT ALL until the drug scandal- that's how I learnt about her music because they played it on the news. For years people used to Photoshop actors faces into photos of pornos, I had issues with that.

The difference when it comes to art? Yes I think some people can be disturbing. We have Rule 34 for a reason guys. However the difference is that the art is usually not "realistic." We can tell it's hand drawn whether digital or hardcopy.

AI is luckily easy to spot usually. But it's too close in resemblance to these real people. A lot of porn websites have resorted to using AI, which is why I have a massive issue with this too. AI is two minutes if writing a description and having a computer generate. It's impulsive and dangerous.

Deepfakes, they've already made pornos with Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift and Katy Perrys faces I believe. There was a massive scandal when a man used the face of his female best friend in a deep fake porno because he had a "unrequited crush" for her and when she discovered the deepfake video on his computer while he was busy, she left and took him to court over sexual violation and privacy policies. It was HUGE. i hate Ai and Deepfakes.

There's even a constant debate on pedophiles using AI and Deepfakes as a means of gaining CP without soliciting CP... (I say guillotine their cock, hands, burn off their clits and spoon out their eyes with a melon ball scooper spoon but hey that's me ✌️ barbaric barbie.)

The difference between NSFW smut fics and AI porn, is:

1. Smut takes effort and time to write. AI writes and steals content for you. There's no creativity.

2. Because it's a written fic, they should have warnings and tags. It should be noted in RPF that the actors are not the same as your write them to be. This is why I changed a lot of my rpf into the characters they play.

3. Fics require imagination. AI is visual. No one can police your genuine imagination.

4. There are actors who have been uncomfy or flushed at the sight of themselves or the character version of them in NSFW Situations. Loki the pole dancing art and mpreg were show to Tom Hiddleston, who had a chuckle and many emotions of confusion with disgust and horror. I can imagine many actors would prefer to see an effort in art and literature when it comes to evil things instead of just some half baked computer program that creates lewd and anticlimactic imagery.

The only time I have ever excused it's use was for the chance to see my dads face move again because I don't have many videos of him, and as morbid as it is there's a comfort to seeing him smile in ai moveable photo scanning apps. But to many others this would be considered disrespectful to the dead and to be honest I would side with them if it came down to banning ai and Deepfakes forever.

I'm in a rambling mood tonight and I just kinda wanna talk about something meaningless. A friend put these tags on a post she retweeted tonight and it just kinda got me thinking (not in a bad way, not mad at you or throwing shade Jade <3)

I feel like this isn't an uncommon sentiment tbh. I don't think anyone would have an issue with advertisements on the internet if they were small, unintrusive banner ads. If a website had a little banner for coca-cola or the latest blockbuster movie, it wouldn't really matter to me or many other people; we basically have the same thing going on with billboards along roads and nobody really complains about those.

And it got me thinking about the reason why we're in this advertising-hell we are now, the constant war between sites trying to either guilt-trip you or lock you out entirely if you use adblock, adblockers trying to get around their detection methods, and users spreading methods to get around the guilt-tripping/lockouts of sites

I think it's easy to just say that companies got greedy and kept demanding more intrusive ads, stepping it up from simple banner images to flashing animated banners to entire videos that they want autoplayed with volume on whenever you open a page, to the point where adblock became necessary to have a good viewing experience, meaning the less extreme ads weren't profitable anymore because less people were seeing them.

I think that's definitely a big part of it, but I don't think it's the whole explanation

And then I suddenly remembered, flash player. Back in the late 2000s/early 2010s, it was everywhere. Nowadays I think most people just remember it for games and video players, but it really was for EVERYTHING at the time - including ads.

That was before HTML5, before it was as easy to make a site dynamic with just stock Javascript - if you wanted to do anything more complicated than images and links, you needed something like Flash Player to do it (that's a bit of an exaggeration, but still, you get my point).

So, advertisements wanted to make things more dynamic than just a banner GIF - more complex animations, reacting when you put your mouse over them, multiple buttons for different sites, etc., and so they were flash applets.

And the important thing about Flash Player is that it was horrible for performance. Flash was a resource hog even with well-programmed stuff, and a LOT of ads at the time were poorly programmed, super inefficient for how simple they were.

I had an absolutely terrible laptop back in 2014/2015, just a very slow clunker that could barely handle browsing the web most of the time, and I remember opening Task Manager and killing Flash Player around every half-hour or so because the advertisements on sites like TVTropes or Wikia were both so abundant and so poorly-programmed that Flash would be taking up like 75% of what little RAM my PC had at the time. A lot of the reasons people recommended installing adblockers was because of the massive performance increase you'd get from not having all of those resource-hogging applets active at once.

So it makes me wonder, would we still be in this ad hellscape we are now if Flash Player hadn't existed, or at least been better programmed? If every flashing banner at the time hadn't been its own independent program running on a slow virtual machine for very little benefit?

I mean, the answer is probably yes, we still would've gotten companies who got too greedy and tried to force more and more intrusive ads on us constantly - but I can't help but wonder how different things could've been if it weren't for all those years of your tabs instantly coming to a screeching halt just because an advertisement wanted to have two links at once and the developers decided the best way to do that would be to make the entire thing a Flash applet.

TL;DR: I'm holding Adobe responsible for every single time I see one of those "Hey, please disable your adblock. We neeeeeeeeeed to show you the most obnoxious advertisements on planet Earth or else our multi-billion dollar company won't be able to keep the lights on :(" messages from a megacorp that could definitely stand to cut corners in other ways instead of trying to guilt-trip people into having a worse experience for their own benefit.
